More about Irit and her workshop:
Irit Dulman works from her studio in Givatayim, just outside Tel Aviv, Israel. Irit’s exploration of ecoprint is focused on stark prints and bold colors derived from nature. A true master of art, her constant experimentation produces new techniques, which she teaches in her workshops organized worldwide.
Students will start with learning the multi layered techniques of eco-printing which makes images with depth and textures. During the 5 day period, students will be taught how to combine leaves and natural dyes to create beautiful pieces of textiles. They will learn the individual capacities of leaves and how to apply it to botanicals from their own local environment. Application of natural dyes to fabric and how to mordant fabrics correctly for maximum effect of the dyes will be taught. Natural dyes we will explore in the class include Indigo, Madder, Weld, Logwood and Cochineal. There will be eucalyptuses and casuarinas among other local foliage. After students study the interplay between natural dyes and leaves on fabric, they are given composition exercises on textile design. During the last part of the workshop, students can experiment with small garments they have brought from home like t-shirts and cut pattern pieces that they would take home and sew. Eco-print special fabrics will be available on premises to purchase and will include both cellulose (cotton, linen, hemp, nettle) and protein (silk and wool) fabrics. A wide selection of Indian natural dye stuff will also be available to order.
Delicious hot lunches are provided on all days of the workshop. Special requests regarding food can be placed prior to the workshop.
